About the book;
“My aim was to write a book on the world’s wisdom that is not overly scholarly, but thorough in its content, so it is a holistic source of thought,” Chavooshian says. “ThePursuit of Wisdom allows one to have a better understanding of how to live, think and make decisions in the world around us.”
The book’s subtitle is “A Chronological Inquiry of the World’s Most Influential Seekers of Wisdom In the Fields of Theology, Philosophy and Science.” In it, Chavooshian covers thinkers such as Francis Bacon, who stated in “Meditations Sacrae” that “Knowledge itself is power.”
Chavooshian uses words like “self-discovery” to help inspire readers who may have previously found the subject matter unapproachable. For anyone particularly curious about one of the people covered in the book, every chapter ends with a list of “Principle Works” that is a good beginning to learn more.
When considering what there is to know about the world, the average reader probably has an interest leading them to theology, philosophy and science. Thebasic and profound question – “Who am I?” – features possible answers in all three fields.
Theology’s greatest thinkers address issues of the soul. Philosophy ponders theconcept of humanity’s free will, or whether we live in a world that’s pre-determined. Science entails theories including evolution, which many argue challenges thetheological account of where we come from.
The Pursuit of Wisdom has earned praise from a range of reviewers. Kirkus Reviews describes it as a “useful guidebook for readers looking for a little inspiration or purpose.”
“I am particularly sensitive to the needs of young people who are trying to understand themselves and the world better – and to the curiosity of adults, for whom personal growth, understanding and curiosity is a lifelong commitment,” Chavooshian says. “Socrates said it best in Plato’s ‘Apology.’ ‘An unexamined life is not worth living.’ ”
