When I was a little girl my father indulged my appetite for the arts. I saw some Broadway shows, Orchestras, Ballets, Plays and that is just to name a few. Regrettable I have never taken my Boyznberries to a live show and I really felt bad. Going with tradition I loved when I would go with my parents and it is something to this day that I always treasure. So when I was invited to see LE CORSAIRE SUITE, which was a Festival Ballet Theatre production, I was so elated. To be honest when I told my boys all but one was less than enthused. They begged if they could stay home and I was so hurt by this and realized at this point I failed them as a mother. I failed them to appreciate the arts by not exposing them sooner. Like any parent in this situation I bribed them to go. As in if they didn’t go I would disconnect all electronics for a week. Happily their attitudes changed.
The venue was at the Irvine Barclay Theatre, which was in our neighborhood. Wasn’t too bad of a trek at all. When we arrived for the show they had an arts and craft table for the kids to make play puppets and my five year old happily enjoyed making his Ballet Dancer.
My middle one who didn’t want to go excitedly helped his brother as well as devoured a chocolate chip cookie they gave to all the kids that were crafting.
My oldest was still unsure of this whole ordeal and he just watched us before we were seated.
Before I went to my seat, Ms. Salwa Rizkalla; Artistic Director showed me around and I was so elated to meet the dancers back stage.
I was able to meet Vitor Luiz who began his professional career with Birmingham Royal Ballet and performed as a principal dancer with Ballet do Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janerio.
Prior to joining San Francisco Ballet as a principal dancer in 2009. His repertory is extensive along with the many roles he played. In 2010 Luiz was nominated for the Isadora Duncan Dance Award for Best Ensemble Performance in Possokhov’s Classical Symphony during the 2010 Repertory Season. Victor Luiz was the guest artist for the performance.
When watching the Ballet I glanced over and my boys were better than I expected them to be.
Not only that they were truly mesmerized by the show and I felt like I did a great job as a mother by indulging my passion for the arts and sharing it with them.
When the lights went up for the second time and it was time to go my oldest one leaned over to me and asked; “Mom why haven’t you taken us to the ballet before. I really enjoyed it and I want to see The Nutcracker, will you take me?” My middle one said he had a fun time and it wasn’t as bad as he thought it would be. My youngest said he wants to be a dancer even more now.
For me this was the best day ever! I loved that my boys could enjoy something like this. My only regret is that I waited so long to take them. That won’t happen again, I love that my boys are enjoying the arts. I am so glad I didn’t cave when they said they didn’t want to go. They thought they wouldn’t have a great time and guess what they did. So did I.
