Recently the boys and I ventured out of our little community and we found some beauties around that we have yet to explore to the fullest. We walked around Rancho Santa Margarita Lake and it was so beautiful to spend the morning enjoying the weather. Watching people kayak on the lake or fish. Very family friendly and so relaxing. This was the epitome of what a Sunday should be, for me anyway. It was so beautiful and inviting. The kids were behaved and were very ravenous after our walk. As we walked up the steps just a few feet away from the lake we were pleasantly surprised to see The Blind Pig which sits nicely above the lake. What a perfect day for a Sunday brunch. The weather was inviting and the place looked so trendy and kid friendly so we crept in.
After looking at their Sunday brunch menu the Foodie Kings and I were ready to take flight on our epic journey with new foods and give it a whirl. Their food is for the true foodies at heart.
Taking the ordinary and making them extraordinary. My kids were hesitant at first however they were so glad they gave it a whirl.
My oldest had the Shell pasta with the white cheddar, bacon and scallions. So rich and creamy, you need to be warned. Once you take one bite it will be hard to stop or if you are sharing; you need to get your own bowl. Not your average shell pasta with cheese drenched upon it. Its the rite of passage from the shells and cheese you are used to. Screams sophistication, draws the attention of your palate and delivers both taste and excitement. Its so creamy and rich and the bacon compliments well with the scallions so delicately placed.
My middle son had the Burger/ Bison. With sharp cheddar cheese. He is dubbed “TFIT” The Foodie In Training. He opted not to indulge and tantalize his taste buds with caramelized onions, arugula, spicy aioli on the brioche bun. When I asked why not, his reply; ” Because I am 10 mom!” Not an excuse in my book. LOL
My youngest had the chicken fingers and although I was bored with the selection, TFIT was happy to compromise with me. Upon his request he had his fries delivered with salt, pepper, ketchup and spicy aioli. A boy after my own heart. I was so proud of him for venturing out of his comfort zone. Yes I know he is only 4 years old however I like that his pallet is becoming refine.
Just look at this golden delicious fried masterpiece just asking to be ever so swayed in a sea of spicy aioli. It wasn’t that spicy but had a little bit of a kick. My son liked it and so did I.
I needed to wake up my taste buds so I had their freshly squeezed lemonade.
As I was enjoying the scenery, the weather my well behaved kids I couldn’t have asked for a better time. Although after hearing the specials for Sunday I think next time I might leave them at home and call UBER. They have a bottomless mimosa from 11-2pm for $12. Or their Bloody Mary for $5.
It was time for mommy to partake in this fine dining adventure. I opted to have brussels sprouts. They were delicious. Burnt onion cream, crispy shallots, scallions and chive oil. Are you kidding me? Nothing I ever expected. This dish right here are the things foodies live for! I love when people get creative and dance around with seasonings and sauces and let their creativity shine with their food. It was delicious. So much so that my two other ones kept wanting to share. Grrrrrr!
I also had the Croque Madame/ Mortadella, shallot marmalade, white cheddar mormay and I didn’t have the fried egg on top. It was an interesting combination with a unquie taste. I kept eating it trying to figure out why I liked it so. It was just a melody that sang to its own tune. One of those things you just like but can’t really explain why, only that it tasted great and everything complemented each other while gliding along your tastebuds.
I must say after our meal we had dessert. My boys and I shared the banana bread. It was so moist and wonderful. So as I took one bite I asked if it was a family recipe? I was told it was. I knew it had to be by the way it tasted. It was wonderful. If you love banana bread you need to try this out. You will cry it is so good. Smooth, moist and inviting. It will remind you of your childhood and it will end a happy dining experience.
The Blind Pig is worth seeking out, the Sunday Brunch is not your average brunch. For the true foodies. Don’t worry they do have things for the simpleton as well. Ok maybe that was a bit harsh but as you can see from TFIT above, they ventured out and they had a great dining experience. I will be back!
