Being a single parent can often feel like being on a deserted island, sometimes wondering where you belong, as many Churches don’t have support groups or just a group. Many of your friends are married and even if they were single parents at one time or not, they have other obligations with their families with their significant others. I have been blessed to be a part of a church that has come along side me. I still find myself with the same challenges of being single and needing support from other single parents who can relate. They have a singles group, just not a single parents group.
My friend that I ran into from years ago on campus was telling me about a single parents group. At first I was hesitant, as I didn’t want to go because that would mean really admitting I was a single parent. Its ok to say I am one, however going to a group made me kind of sad as this was and is my reality. With prayer and others encouraging me to go, I went to my first group a couple of months ago. When I joined I opted to do a book club every other Wednesday night. The book that we are currently finishing up is called, Conversation Peace by Mary A. Kassian. It is a fabulous book that takes six weeks and leaves you feeling empowered and guided with scripture.
While attending the book club I have also volunteered with my boys to fundraise for special events to help homeless single parents, meals for a week, and cleaning supplies. I am now on the board starting February 6th. I get to help with planning and giving ideas, I feel I can finally give back in an area that I feel so passionate about – Single Parents.
I enjoy this group so much, I feel like I have a place to belong. A group that understands the struggles of single parenting and other parents that you can connect with. They also have retreats for the single parents, kids, they offer things to help out financially. Its worth looking into.

I also would like to give a special gift (a little household item) to a single parent who lives in Orange County who would be interested in joining One Step. If you comment in the box below and say, “I’m Interested”, I will pick one lucky winner February 1st. Here’s the catch, I will give you your item when you visit One Step Ministry on Wednesday for our book club, which is every other week from 6-8pm. Dinner and Child Care are provided. So much to gain and more wonderful things to get you connected in our community. Please check out the link and I hope to hear from you soon!
