Since my son loves play dough and I can only keep up with so much supply and demand. I decided to make my own. It was such a success with my little guy that I wanted to share my budget friendly, nice smelling, 5 yo approved play dough with you. I hope you enjoy!
Ingredients;
1 Cup Flour
1/2 Cup salt
2 Tablespoon cream of tartar ( this is found down the spice aisle)
1 Tablespoon of oil (I use vegetable)
1 Cup of water
Food coloring (two to three drops depending on how light or dark you want it. Kind of like salting your soup, it has to be to your liking)
Essential oils (I used; lavender, Mint and Orange a few drops of each, so its not overwhelming)
Directions:
First you will mix; the first four ingredients in the pan (1 cup of flour, 1/2 cup of salt, 2 tablespoons cream of tartar and 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil)
Next add the water and cook over low to medium heat. You will need to stand over the pan and stir constantly. It usually takes me 2-4 minutes depending on the heat and what setting you have it on. If it starts to look like this you are doing it right!!!
As It becomes more difficult to move I remove from heat to make sure I don’t burn the play dough. I separate the dough in two somewhat equal parts. While I do this I add the food coloring and start to blend it in with a spoon. It is hot so be very careful.
One it cools off so I can handle it in my hands I add the essential oils to the color of play dough I want to use.
Clean up is a breeze!
Most importantly you will have a little kiddo who will be memorized for just a few extra minutes and your house will smell wonderful with some of the oils. When I store my play dough I use an empty plastic container. It tends to last longer that ways. However if you are going to use plastic sandwich type bags you need to wait until the play dough is cooled completely before you bag it up.
The best part of homemade play dough in my opinion is that I don’ t get all OCD if they mix all the colors and crumble it together. Its also nice that for most of us 90% of the ingredients are in our kitchen.
